VDO Guest Post: The Vampire Diaries From A Dude’s Perspective
Posted by Ruthie • 16 Comments »

I’m excited to announce our very first guest post on Vampire Diaries Online! We’ve been wanting to do guest posts for a while now, so when my new Twitter bud @SafiTaffy99 contacted me about doing one, I jumped at the chance!  He has chosen to remain anonymous, which I told him would be completely fine with me.  In his post, he touches on what drew him in to watching the show and gives his perspective on Stefan and Elena’s relationship.

So I’ve got a confession to make. I like TVD – no, wait, scratch that – I actually love TVD. *sigh* much better. I really needed to get that off my chest. But here’s the kicker – I’m actually a guy that actually enjoys watching a TV show which for all intents and purposes I should be shunning. I mean c’mon, what “full grown alpha male” in his right mind would ever admit to liking this show? Especially since it’s supposedly for the “screaming sappy girl fans of Twilight” – ok that was a bit harsh, but you get my point. Yet here I am readily admitting my admiration of all things TVD. Could I possibly be insane? Read on dear friends read on.

So how did this all start? Was I compelled or perhaps turned? Actually, I was channel surfing one night when out of the blue I came across the promo for the TVD pilot. Like the typical guy that I am, I was immediately drawn to Elena and had to find out what this show was all about. After I had finished watching the pilot I found myself thinking about the episode long after the credits had rolled especially the relationship between Elena and Stefan.

Let us begin with our hero, and the “ying” to Elena’s “yang” – if you will – Stefan Salvatore. The younger of the vampire brothers, Stefan is adeptly played by actor Paul Wesley. Who, very quickly, has become a perfect fit playing a “brooding, serious, and dark” chap the ladies have grown to love and adore. But in that adoration lies a character who, at his heart, is a hopeless romantic who was forced to make a choice between death and immortality that he never wanted to but had to given the circumstances he was in. He is torn between struggling to maintain his humanity while at the same time control and rise above his very animal like nature. To further complicate matters, Stefan is an honorable man for whom, in his sense of right and wrong, there is no area of grey. And as a result he often is unable to see beyond what he can lose – which in this case is Elena. Because of his “blindness” he ends up making selfish decisions that often disregard her feelings but in his mind are for the “greater good”. But yet for all his flaws and his strengths it defines Stefan to be so much more than just a Vampire. For in that struggle to experience as normal a life as possible while still holding onto his humanity, he finds the closest thing to salvation & peace in his love for Elena.

And now the “yang”, and the object of Stefan’s affections, Elena Gilbert is a down to earth, kind, and selfless young woman who is trying to cope with the tragic loss of her parents. Played by the beautifully charismatic model/actress Nina Dobrev, Elena is looking to start over and rebuild her once story book life while facing a greater sense of reality – even if it’s harsh. Yet she does not let the harsh reality before her keep her from seeing the good in others, especially in the mysterious and intriguing Stefan. Attracted to him and looking for a new beginning, she soon falls in love with him and realizes that he is the hope that she is looking for even when she discovers his dark secret. At her core, Elena is neither a cynic nor is she weak, but rather she is a young woman who is rational, strong, and determined. However, just as these strengths help her to transcend her past and deal with her relationship with Stefan it can also be a means of great turmoil. For her, the slightest sense of mistrust from anyone – especially from those she loves – is met with a strong emotional reaction. And as a result, Elena ends up doing and saying things that have repercussions which are difficult to overcome and further complicate the relationship she and Stefan have. Not to mention adding to the already pent up frustration we feel for the both of them as an audience.  Yet, even then she still manages to shine. Because just as Elena has a strong emotional side to her she is also capable of great reason and is soon able to work through whatever mental or emotional block that is keeping her from seeing the good in people or the situation she finds herself in. She doesn’t deny her feelings, especially when they feel right, but instead embraces them and pursues them in the most tenacious of ways. Like Stefan, she too is struggling to regain her humanity and rise above her personal tragedy by finding salvation in the love of a man who himself is as imperfect as she is.

Now I know what you’re thinking – I must be a psych major. And you know what? You’d be right. But after 10 amazing episodes of watching these two characters grow and come together, a large part of the credit in defining their relationship has to go to the wonderfully talented writers of TVD – Kevin Williamson & Julie Plec. Who, I’m convinced, are actually teenagers trapped in adult bodies – but don’t take my word for it. Because honestly, I don’t think anyone can portray teenage angst better than this dynamic duo. They have done a wonderful job of bringing Stefan & Elena’s relationship to life and filling Mystic Falls with a cast of characters that make the show fun and intriguing. In other words, this isn’t your daddy’s Dawson’s Creek or Buffy – this is something totally new and just plain awesome.

But I digress, so let us get back to our special couple and the reason for my adoration. In the end everything that Stefan and Elena are going through is built around trying to transcend their own flaws and grow stronger together as a couple. Every obstacle, shortcoming, challenge – be it from each other, their own pasts, or the surrounding circumstances – are measured and built to push their relationship further to the breaking point. But yet somehow through it all they manage to never forget each other even in the most impossible of situations. It’s as if in some way Kevin & Julie are trying to answer the following questions: How much do you truly love someone and how much are you willing to sacrifice along the way to be with them? Unfortunately, for us the audience, we can’t fast forward to the end for the answers we have to be patient and watch with baited breathe as they deal with the ups and downs of their beautifully haunting relationship. While secretly wishing we could bring them together and save them from whatever trouble they find themselves in we are forced to watch from a distance and hope their journey will be smooth. But as in life, so as in TV land, nothing good ever comes easy even if it’s the love between a girl and a vampire.

It’s true. This post is beautifully thought-out and insightful. However, I’ll have to wait to see how the series plays out in order to make judgment on whether TVD is good or not. If memory serves me correctly, I think the vampire to human love story gets more complicated and… unexpected. I’m a stickler for keeping with the original literary plot so we’ll see what the writers do…
