September 25, 2009 (Burbank, CA) –  Facing all original competition, including the hyper-hyped “FlashForward” debut, The CW’s new hit series THE VAMPIRE DIARIES held its ground, and held 100% of its audience last week among women 18-34 (2.6/8), adults 18-34 (1.8/6) and women 18-49 (2.3/6), according to preliminary live plus same day Nielsen ratings for Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009.  In fact, in broader categories, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES improved over last week among adults 18-49 (1.7/5) and total viewers (3.81mil)

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES easily won the 8:00-9:00p.m. hour with female teens (2.8/12) and teens (2.2/9). VAMPIRE DIARIES beat NBC’s comedies in adults 18-34 and women 18-34 and tied with Fox’s “Bones” in women 18-34.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES is also delivering solid year-to-year time period growth (versus an original SMALLVILLE), improving 6% in adults 18-34, 73% in women 18-34, +44% in women 18-49, +115% in female teens and +38% in teens.

Now in its 5th season, SUPERNATURAL has seen its ratings grow over last season by 27% with women 18-34 (1.4/4), 9% in adults 18-34 (1.2/3) and 8% in women 18-49 (1.3/3).

In its first night against all original competition, The CW’s Thursday is up year-to-year in key demos, +7% in adults 18-34 (1.5/5), +54% in women 18-34 (2.0/6), +29 percent in women 18-49 (1.8/5), +43% in female teens (2.0/8).

Exciting news from the Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed!  Nine more scripts have been ordered for The Vampire Diaries!

The CW’s freshman breakout “The Vampire Diaries” is edging closer to a full-season pickup.

The network ordered nine additional scripts for the show, which is the closest step executives can take without committing to a full pickup.

The CW also gave a full-season order to veteran drama “One Tree Hill,” picking up the back nine episodes, making it the second program after Fox’s “Glee” to get a full order this fall.

The struggling “Melrose Place” also received an additional script order, with The CW ordering six scripts in the wake of signing original series star Heather Locklear to join the show.

Not included in The CW’s order: “Beautiful Life,” which had a modest premiere last Wednesday.

We debated whether to post anything about the whole alleged flashing incident, but since Kayla Ewell felt like she needed to set the record straight when she spoke with EW today, how could we not??  Kayla explains what all went down, and how everything has been exaggerated.

vampire-diaries-kayla-ewell-vickiAccording to Ewell, the incident was more innocent than it was made out to be. The actress says while on a road trip with her castmates (the show shoots nearby), the group decided to stop to take pictures on a bridge. That’s when they were rushed by Monroe County cops. “They were like, ‘We’re getting calls that people are flashing,’” Ewell says. “And we’re like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa. The only thing that’s flashing is our camera.’” The actress says that after showing police their photos, the group was asked to follow officials to the police station, where they were ticketed for loitering on a public walkway.

Think of it as One Tree Hillwith sharper teeth.

Chances are, your first inclination is to think of Vampire Diaries as a rip-off of True Blood and Twilight — even though the book it’s based on predates both. But beneath the gothic trappings, Vampire (produced by Dawson’s Creek‘s Kevin Williamson) is just CW doing what it does: building a teen soap around the complicated lives of impossibly pretty, alarmingly worldly young people who manage to seem prosperous even with no visible means of support.

Adults are likely to steer clear, but the show isn’t made for them. It’s made for young women and girls who have a current affection for vampires and a long-standing affection for the good boy/bad boy dynamic. That should be enough to draw them in.

And that’s the only ratings hill CW has any interest in climbing.
