David Anders talks Uncle John with TV Fanatic and what the second season of The Vampire Diaries has in store for the residents of Mystic Falls.

What can we look forward to this season?
There’s the big werewolf storyline cooking up. As far as I’m concerned, Elena walks in after Katherine slices my fingers off and stabs me and she’s got a big decision to make. There’s a lot of Katherine and Elena. Nina’s got a lot of work.

Why did John kill Anna?
The fact that she’s a vampire. He saw that she might have dragged my nephew into vampiredom. I don’t think John approved of that. John is Jeremy’s only male figure in his life, so he treats it like a father/son relationship. It was a hard decision for the producers to make, to let her character go.

Will Uncle John and Elena find a way to get along?
It’s extremely difficult for Elena to see any good in me. I’m not well liked around Mystic Falls [laughs].

Though in last month’s Vampire Diaries cliffhanger Elena’s doppelganger brutally attacked his portrayer, David Anders (John) confirms that he’ll be back for the season premiere. And beyond that?“That’s up in the air right now,” he says. “They haven’t picked up [my] option yet. I feel like the character has a lot of legs and you can go in many different directions with him. But ultimately it’s [executive producer] Kevin Williamson’s choice.”

Although on paper the odds of John surviving would appear slim — the dude got his fingers chopped off and took a blade to the gut — Anders reminds fans, “People don’t always die from knife wounds.”

Here’s a brief Q&A with David Anders via TV Guide Magazine.  David will be playing John Gilbert, the uncle  of Elena and Jeremy Gilbert, who has just come back to town.  See him tonight on The Vampire Diaries episode “Under Control” at 8/7pm central.

Who’s your latest character we love to hate?
He’s John Gilbert, the uncle of Elena and Jeremy, their father’s brother. He and Aunt Jenna have history. He’s a smug, overconfident individual who’s toying with everybody in Mystic Falls. [Laughs] Nobody likes Uncle John.

Why is John back in town?
He’s a vampire slayer of a sort. He knows more than he should about vampires and holds the information over Damon’s and Stefan’s heads so they can help me when I need them. Damon and John have a lot of good scenes. He’s not afraid of Damon, because for some reason, he can’t hurt John.

Who are his allies?
The town council is eating out of his hand. He’s one of the town’s favorite sons who’s returned.

What are his goals?
I can’t go into his end game, but he’s there to complicate everyone’s life. He certainly messes with [fellow vampire hunter] Alaric.

Will he seduce any of the town’s lovely ladies?
I’ve been told that there will be some of that action going on. [Laughs] It won’t be Jenna.

Here’s an awesome Q&A with David Anders by Starry Constellation Magazine. David really delivered on The Vampire Diaries Scoop! Check it out

***Spoiler Alert***

Q. What can you tell us about your character Jonathan Gilbert and about his back story, both the back story you were provided and the one you created? Did you watch the show at all to get a feel for it?

A. He is Elena and Jeremy’s uncle and I’ve been having a lot of stuff with Damon, Ian Somerhalder’s character, and my character is not at all afraid of Damon. We find ourselves in a bunch of pissing contests going toe to toe. My character proves to be a good foe for Damon.

I watched one episode of the show the night before I flew out here. I watched one episode to get the feel of the show and get a little back story going. They offered the part to me and I really had no idea about the character. I accepted the part without really knowing anything about it, I was like, “Well that sounds like fun!” Ian Somerhalder and I were going to do a movie together last year and it ended up losing funding. I was friends with him and thought it would be a fun time, and it is, it’s proved to be just that. I have been having a blast, they are a great group of people.

Q. You mentioned your connection with Ian, is there any other reasons that you wanted to be a part of the show?

A. I thought it would be fun and it’s kind of a hit for the CW, it gets good ratings, and I thought coming to Atlanta to shoot would be fun. I play bad guys, that’s what I do, and they told me I would be kind of a villain in the show.

Q. Is there anything about the role that you find challenging?

A. No, not so far, not so far. Everything that they’ve given me has been well within my wheelhouse. I look forward to the challenges that the writers will present me with in the future.

Q. Executive producer Julie Plec has said your character will further complicate matters, can you tell us a bit more about your characters relationship with Damon?

A. Just like his great grandfather, the original Jonathan Gilbert in 1864, he knows far too much about vampires, more than he should know about vampires. So I’m a know-it-all and I hold the information that I have over Damon and Stefan’s heads threatening to expose them in Mystic Falls if they don’t play ball with me. There is a lot more than that which I can’t really go into.

EW has an exclusive first look at David Anders on The Vampire Diaries. Check it out! And beware below, if you don’t want to be spoiled.

Vampire Diaries execs didn’t have to cut through any bloody red tape to cast David Anders as Elena and Jeremy’s uncle, Jonathan Gilbert. “When we started talking about this role, I immediately thought, ‘What about Sark from Alias?’ executive producer Julie Plec recalls. “We called his agent the next day and the day after that [the deal was] done.”It’s fair to say Anders’ arrival in Mystic Falls will be slightly more complicated. The Alias and Heroes alum makes his debut in the April 15 episode when it comes time for Elena and Jeremy to sell their father’s doctor office. “He has to sign the escrow papers but he isn’t quite ready to give the office up,” explains fellow e.p., Kevin Williamson. “But like everyone else in town, he’s there for something [else]. His intentions are not pure.”

We wouldn’t have it any other way. Would we?

Great casting news via Ausiello! David Anders, who just so happened to have played one of my favorite characters from Heroes has been cast to play Jeremy and Elena’s Uncle Jonathan Gilbert.

24’s loss is The Vampire Diaries‘ gain!

David Anders, who (spoiler alert) permanently clocked out of 24 last night, has rebounded with a multi-episode arc on The CW smash, sources confirm to me exclusively.

The Alias and Heroes alum will play Elena and Jeremy’s uncle, Jonathan Gilbert, who comes to Mystic Falls to “cause some trouble,” teases an insider.

If that name sounds familiar, it’s because, well, it should. Jonathan Gilbert is the name of Elena and Jeremy’s circa-1800 ancestor. Old school Jonathan debuted via flashback earlier this month as played by Joe Knezevich.

Look for Anders’ present-day Jonathan to turn up in April.
